2003-02-05 03:24:54 I tried the testtool solution and it works great with my 3300C (using kernel method with a redhat 2.4.18 kernel). The 3300c status icon should be set to a green V on this pages now :-) Little ps: when an USB device doesn't work properly, check the cable integrity first ;)

2002-12-20 08:37:02 Oakey Doakey here goes, I went to sourceforge searched for 3300 and came up with "Project Name-HP3300c SANE backend" I clicked on that and got "Project:HP33ooc SANE backend:summary" Scrolled down to "Package Testtool" and clicked on "Download" Now under "testtool I clicked on "libsane1-1.0.8-5mdk_3300_20021120.i586.rpm" But is that the right package cause it don't seem to work. I mean I installed it and all I get when I clicked on the scanner icon on the desktop is an xsane End User Agreement which I agree to and then another screen Error xsane: no devices available I click on close. End of story. Am I doing something wrong here or have I downloaded the wrong file. I'm completely out of my depth here but would like too be able to use my 3300c scanner on my Linux box. Am a newbie and very green at Linux I self taught myself windows and am 68 year old, please can you help in any way. I hope this is the right place to post this wee message. cheers nzmerlin in Linux ;-)

2002-07-18 03:47:06 Hurray!! For everybody who has a 3300C or 4300C: good news wwwsourceforgenet supplies a testtool (in fact it's the driver) for 3300 and 4300. -simply search for "3300" and "libusb" (select the first libusb-item) - and download the tar.gz-files download the sane backend source "1.0.8.tar.gz" from ftp//:mostang.com/sane-1.0.8 and follow the instructions of "sourceforge" I was able to do color scans on my 4300C without problems. You you'll also be able to. Good luck!

2002-06-21 22:19:33 Iam using the niash testtool from Bertrik Sikken for month now, with only good results. The Compilation/Installation is not too easy, but there are very good Instructions.

2001-12-24 03:58:38 There is a project page at http://sourceforge.net/projects/hp3300backend The sane backend is called niash after the chip inside. It's in development, but if you want a driver then join the mailing list and help out.
saransk

2001-12-21 21:41:10 HP has long been known for the way it screws with drivers. This is nothing new. I do feel that the 3300C should make it clear it runs under Windows - period (the XP upgrade preserves all the functions). Will there be Linux drivers-sheez there isn't even a Quicken for Linux yet. I owned this scanner before Linux - and it works well in the WinWorld. USB wasn't supported in either 95a or NT4.0 - it isn't a mad conspiracy, but scanners aren't marketed to the "server" markets. Heck-I can't get the dumb 1200's to work at work on the network - this is typical HP

2001-08-03 14:49:15 Some people had snifed the USB and obtained some information the URL is http://home.zonnet.nl/bertrik/hp3300c/hp3300c.htm#tools. I hope it can be useful. I hope that some people want write a driver for HP 3400c too. greetings bizanto

2001-07-28 04:02:36 Messiah, you say we should do something about it ... perhaps we should write our own Linux driver? After all, we can't really rely on HP for supporting our insignificant OS can we? Well, I'm glad you brought this up 'cause I've been busting my ass trying to write a driver for the HP3300 for a long time. The reason I'm busting my ass is because HP absolutely refuses to release the specs for this scanner ... repeated (and I'll add very polite) requests have been consistently refused by them. Till I get specs I can say the driver will be in a perpetual half-baked state. Sure I can use a USB sniffer, but who has infinite time to do things the nearly impossible way, not me. My advice -- Return the scanner to where you bought it if you can, done, end of story, thanks for the support HP.

2001-07-19 04:57:42 You Lame ass Idiots, Why don't you buy a scanner that works under linux. If you don't do a little pre sales research what do you expect.
Pete
(redmoose <at> oceanfree.net)
2001-07-19 00:15:59 Phil Soko: stop being an idiot and talking through your ass. There is no way in hell you need to install Windows 98, then the drivers, and then upgrade to Win2k to get it working in Win2k. I installed it on a fresh Win2k standalone installation, and also on a WIn98SE standalone installation, both full versions. It was without ANY problems. I hope there are drivers for the 3300C at some stage, but failing that in the future I'll try and pick up one of the supported HP models because let's face it, HP produce decent equipment (made the same mistake as Taco did on the /. article). Looking at the comments below I am sorry that linux has become as mainstream as it has........or is that the problem????????

2001-07-18 23:30:48 I agree that it's a shame that HP doesn't support Linux for its scanners, or at least for this one model--but if you want Linux support, the thing to do is support Linux. Do the research, don't buy something and then kvetch when you find out too late that it doesn't support Linux. Buy something that supports Linux and _let the maker of what you bought *and* the makers of what you didn't buy know why you bought what you did_! Reread _Free to Choose_; the flow of your $$$ communicates to people what you want, so don't misspeak yourself.

2001-07-18 22:34:48 Chill out, you guys are acting so immature. The box states which operating systems are suported, and if you decide to switch to a diff OS 7 months down the road which is not supported, it's your own fault. Your a bunch of stupid kids who don't know how to use Linux properly and expect HP to make the driver you should be making your own damn self.

2001-07-18 19:41:26 Wow, the flamers on here have no concept of professionalism. Ever hear the saying that you attract more flies with honey than shit? If you want a company to respond talking like a schoolyard bully isn't going to work.

2001-07-18 19:36:10 Ungrateful low lifes, So far i've seen you honking on about no drivers... i've seen you abuse employees and companies, but i'm yet to see you raise your own hands to fix the problem yourself (some people are exempt from this statement). For myself linux has always been about writing the bits you needed yourself if they didnt exist already, why not try it? Otherwise maybe the happy little workers at hp can say the same thing to you... ie "why the hell are you honking at us... your the linux user... you fix your os and we'll make our products work". And before you comment... this scanner works just fine... under windows... so the hardware works... Hp have done their job. Now its time for us to do ours... to all those who are complaining... pull yer finger out and learn to code, the time you've spent complaining could have been time coding. And to all you who ARE coding... keep it up... in the end the driver will get done. Remember... linux has always been about the people... coded for the people by the people... so when you want to cast blame... blame the people... not the companies

2001-06-29 04:23:24 Im in the same boat as you people. 3300c scanner just sitting besides my computer collecting dust, should of bought an epson...would of saved some money. I even emailed the company (no luck) hopefully they will eventually listen if there is enough interest. Hp should take a cue from Nvidia especially since they supposedly support open source

2001-06-06 21:00:25 I just did what I thought was there correct thing : returned my HP 3400C to HP after one month usage in Windows98. They had to accept it back and give me the money back as, according to our consumer laws, it should be clearly stamped on the outbox : Windows98 compatible only. It was easy. No more HP ever. Epson is much better.

2001-05-31 09:09:49 Assoles and Bastards at HP, take notice. You'll better provide the linux drivers for ALL your fucking products be it scanners, printers et al or else soon you are going to smell Bill Gates' fart and eat it shit.

2001-04-24 08:28:38 HP seems to be fucking the customer. I have a 3400C scanner and an 8200e USB CD Writer. Both do not have any drivers for linux. HP seems to be still smeeling Gates' asshole rather than coming out of it. Beware Hp, Linux is going strong and unless you recognize that and properly support your hardware under Linux, you are going to Piss in your pants one day.

2001-04-06 20:53:03 Just returned my scanner today (that happens when you don't check before you shop). HP seems to have forgotten what once made them strong: standards and open interfaces. No drivers - no sale

2001-03-13 01:09:36 I think this stinks, what is the point of producing a USB scanner and not bothering to produce drivers which are required by a large number of end users? I think H.P need to wake and smell the coffee. No Linux drivers will very soon mean no sale for your Hardware. Linux is coming of age.........Yet H.P seems to be still in nappies. Oh well I guess when It comes to our clients upgrading there scanner hardware we wont be recommending H.P products anymore!!! Hopefully the guys at H.P will take notice............................................

2000-11-03 00:23:07 we should all email oslo@hp.com and ask for drivers. I would think that a large number of requests would get some sort of response.

2000-10-20 09:31:14 HP is totally ghetto w/r/t drivers. A friend of mine had this scanner, got an iMac, but there are no Mac drivers for this scanner either!!! (I mean MACs, for chrissake, it's the "graphics" computer [yeah right]) So I trade him for my Microtek, log on to the HP site for drivers... AND I HAVE TO PAY $10 FOR A CD!!!! Thank god I didn't actually spend money on this piece of shit.

2000-08-30 10:05:18 What about HP's Scanjet 3400C - this has both parallel port and USB port?
Phil Soko
(soko <at> michonline.com)
2000-08-24 03:29:10 Not only does the 3300C not work on 95, but if you download HP's Win2k drivers (which were just released) they do not work unless you install 98 first, install the HP win98 drivers, then upgrade the OS to win2k, and then apply the win2k drivers. Applying the drivers from a native win2k install does not work. Only upgrades are supported. HP=Cockmasters

2000-08-21 23:52:57 HP guys are assholes. They sell Linux PCs (Kayak Workstations) but they don't write the drivers. What's worse, 3300c works with Win98 but not with Win95. LAME BILL GATES' COCKSU***RS!
Brockman

2000-08-03 19:49:51 I'd be interested in hacking some drivers to get this thing working. It's a cute little scanner, really targeted at the low-mid range casual user (get some photos in, etc). gimmie a holler.

2000-07-17 22:53:31 Do you know, where I can get documentation on how to address the scanner and stuff from so that I can try to write a driver by myself. Or has anyone already done so or is working on it very hard.
