CommentThe device is based on the SiS162u chip. Searching the net, I found the discussion thread above. There seems to be a driver on the manufacturer's page: ftp://ftp.gericom.com/NOTEBOOK/Acessories-USB/USB-WLAN-Linux.tgz But beware: People in the netstumbler-forum wrote it SUCKS. Compiling failed for me with 2.6.9 and 2.4.27 - producing a whole bunch of evil gcc and make error messages. This device looks similar to mine: http://www.ccandc.com.tw/product/11b-wl-1207.htm Update: (01.01.05) I found a driver identical to the Gericom one (2nd vendor link)

2005-09-30 21:35:39 According to the ndiswrapper mailing list ndiswrapper 1.4-rc1 now supports sis162-based devices: http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?thread_id=8321710&forum_id=36471

2005-04-03 17:22:42 I have USB wireless device marked TRENDnet TEW-229UB, 802.11b Wireless LAN USB Adapter, FCCID:NHPWLB1500 VID:PID is 0457:0162 and it uses a SiS162u. I tried ndiswrapper with the WINXPdrivers from the vendor's CDROM, but got: Mar 27 07:57:36 cerberus kernel: usb 1-1.4: new full speed USB device using ohci_hcd and address 9 Mar 27 07:57:37 cerberus kernel: ndiswrapper (ndiswrapper_add_one_usb_dev:312): Windows driver couldn't initialize the device (C000009A) Mar 27 07:57:37 cerberus kernel: ndiswrapper: probe of 1-1.4:1.0 failed with error -22 Linuxant driverloader version 2.26 also failed: Apr 2 07:43:56 cerberus kernel: usbcore: deregistering driver driverloader Apr 2 07:43:57 cerberus kernel: driverloader: sis162u.sys: 0xf8c8b000..0xf8cb0a00 entry = f8caf200 (pbase = 0x10000) Apr 2 07:44:02 cerberus kernel: usb 1-1.4: modprobe timed out on ep0in Apr 2 07:44:02 cerberus kernel: eth1: failed to initialize adapter (err = -12) Apr 2 07:44:02 cerberus kernel: eth1: Failed to register net device (-12) Apr 2 07:44:02 cerberus kernel: driverloader: probe of 1-1.4:1.0 failed with error -12 I then tried the slightly newer drivers available from: http://www.asus.com/support/download/item.aspx?ModelName=A4L&Type=All SiS_USB_WLAN_B_XP_2K_041221.zip The SiS driver appears to require a kernel with a larger stack. I was able to get the device working by installed a kernel (2.6.10-1.770_FC3.stk16, available from Linuxant) with a 16k stack.

2004-08-29 17:40:26 The USB id is also used by the Acer-WLAN-B-US4 adapter. There is a driver (with a binary-only part like the RTL8180 driver) available from the URL above. However compilation of the sis.c wrapper failed for me with Linux Kernel 2.6.6. I was able to build the sis162u.o module with Linux Kernel 2.4.18 but due to the rather limited set of wireless extension ioctls supported, the SiS supplied wlanutl GUI has to be used for configuring the WLAN adapter. Starting with version 0.12rc1 ndiswrapper implements all functions required by the sis162u driver. The driver does not (yet) work with ndiswrapper however.
