2001-11-13 16:14:01 I managed to get this working following Vlad's instructions; thanks. However, I should note for those trying to do this that you pretty much have to forget about using any of the GUI burning programs, at least without doing some considerable rewriting of the config files. Most GUI programs I have tried (xcdroast, koncd, gtoaster) use, by default, read programs that (as Vlad indicated) do not seem to work with this drive, i.e., readcd or cdda2wav from the cdrtools package. Using them crashed the usb-storage module so completely that it would not even unload, requiring a reset of the machine. Be careful, use only cdparanoia or cdrdao for reading. On that note, it seems this drive is deathly slow at DAE. Using cdparanoia -BZ (no error correction) still takes hours to rip a cd to wav files. Anyone else having better luck ripping CD's?

2001-10-23 18:44:06 Hey! I've just tried the 2.4.12(-ac3) kernel and everything seems to work fine. No patches or CVS downloads needed!!! Check the updated hp8230-HOWTO at http://www.geocities.com/paradise_sal/howto/ or http://vlad.fbi.cz/howto/ . Why is the status of this device still 'unsupported'?!

2001-08-14 21:47:34 This CD Writer works! I followed the steps listed by Vlad. Thanks Vlad! On the disappointing side, xcdroast did not work, cdrecord and cdrdao kept giving me errors about some illegal sense key. It seems what you can do depends a lot on the software versions and what you are trying to do. I could blank a CD, write a DATA cd on CDR and CDRW. I have not had success rewriting a CDRW. One issue could be that by default cdrecord uses generic-mmc while this drive may work better with generic-mmc-raw as indicated by Vlad. Another could be its small buffer size 13?? KB. Any comments? 2001-07-11 16:24:09 Hi everybody! I have written a HP CD-Writer+ 8290 HOWTO - that explains (surprise, surprise) how to make the 8290 work!!! You can find it on: http://vlad.fbi.cz/howto/ or http://www.geocities.com/paradise_sal/howto/ . It was also submitted to linuxdoc.org. Have a good fun with makin' your writer work. Cheers! Vlad

2001-06-27 18:19:21 Hey I made my HP CD-Writer+ 8290 work with the patch described bellow. I can mount the device, but when I try to write or read the CDs using cdrecord (1.9) - I get this kernel error: Jun 26 10:46:51 localhost kernel: divide error: 0000 Jun 26 10:46:51 localhost kernel: CPU: 0 Jun 26 10:46:51 localhost kernel: EIP: 0010:[fat:__insmod_fat_S.bss_L2264+222 906/20942977] Jun 26 10:46:51 localhost kernel: EFLAGS: 00010246 Jun 26 10:46:51 localhost kernel: eax: 0000ffff ebx: 00000000 ecx: 00000000 edx: 00000000 Jun 26 10:46:51 localhost kernel: esi: 4b100000 edi: c6a80500 ebp: 4b100000 esp: c4775e80 Jun 26 10:46:51 localhost kernel: ds: 0018 es: 0018 ss: 0018 Jun 26 10:46:51 localhost kernel: Process usb-storage-0 (pid: 661, stackpage=c47 75000) Jun 26 10:46:51 localhost kernel: Stack: c02aa5df c02aa5c6 c0113e36 00000000 000 00000 c02aa5df 0000001c c4775ecf Jun 26 10:46:51 localhost kernel: 00000000 c4775ecf 0000000c c4775f10 c49 b1c00 c6a7b1d9 c49b1c00 c4775f30 Jun 26 10:46:51 localhost kernel: c4775f10 c4747c00 0002b110 50000001 c47 75ee0 ffffffff c024dd20 200091f8 Jun 26 10:46:51 localhost kernel: Call Trace: [printk+342/368] [fat:__insmod_fat _S.bss_L2264+224985/20940898] [vsprintf+908/960] [fat:__insmod_fat_S.bss_L2264+2 10743/20955140] [fat:__insmod_fat_S.bss_L2264+226904/20938979] [fat:__insmod_fat _S.bss_L2264+248480/20917403] [fat:__insmod_fat_S.bss_L2264+207957/20957926] Jun 26 10:46:51 localhost kernel: [fat:__insmod_fat_S.bss_L2264+257036/20908847] [fat:__insmod_fat_S.bss_L2264+215358/20950525] [kernel_thread+38/48] [fa t:__insmod_fat_S.bss_L2264+214656/20951227] [fat:__insmod_fat_S.bss_L2264+257036 /20908847] Jun 26 10:46:51 localhost kernel: Jun 26 10:46:51 localhost kernel: Code: f7 f1 89 c5 0f af e9 55 68 40 05 a8 c6 e 8 14 93 69 f9 6a 07 Anyone knows where the problem might be? 2001-06-14 14:30:28 I can confirm that the HP 8220e/8230e works with both the patches from Matt's site mentioned above. It wouldn't work without the patches, (coming up with the 'Generic CD Reader' without them). I just burnt my first CD-R with the drive with those patches. For the record, the system is Linux 2.4.5, usbmgr 0.4.8, cdrecord 1.10a18.

2001-05-10 03:21:18 Hi, I have just purchased my HP 8220 series (8290e) USB CD-RW. I'm currently running Linux-Mandrake 8.0 (with 2.4.3 kernel) & in the Control Centre -> Hardware, it shows my CD-R entry correctly and has assigned it as /dev/scd0. What can I do now? Do I still need to patch it or can I just mount it straight away. If so, how do I mount a CD-RW drive? Thanks for your help, Aaron

2001-04-20 19:31:44 I've come across the following page, with patches and so on: http://cs-people.bu.edu/artdodge/linux/8290/ I don't know if it works, as I don't have any of these puppies to test, but I hope it helps...

2001-04-19 12:25:10 Hi again. The problem described two entries below is caused by trying to burn DAO (disk at once), you might try TAO (track at once) instead, this works for me. Anyway, i still encountered usb-timeouts causing a usb reconnect of the writer usb-storage to oops and then locking up the whole machine.

2001-04-19 12:04:28 I had some success with the patch mentioned below using kernel 2.4.3 on a sony vaio laptop as well as on a i815 based desktop. I was able to burn a cd-r using xcdroast, but the whole setup seems to be quite unstable and the system locked up hard after trying to erase the toc ... altough it worked the first time i tested this.

2001-04-12 20:54:22 I've got a clean copy of a working Matt Dharm patch available at my web site http://cs-people.bu.edu/artdodge/linux/8290/ Applies cleanly against 2.4.X kernels, works for me under 2.4.3, YMMV.

2001-03-23 14:32:56 I got a patch at the linux-usb-user mailing list that makes this drive work. It still show some problems while recording audio cds (hangs up randomly, but I can make it work without booting doing the following: 1st - Take the usb cable out of the device; 2nd - Unload usb-storage module; 3rd - Unload sg module; 4th - Replug the driveīs cable; 5th - Reload usb-storage module; 6th - Reload sg module; It works again, but the hotplug driver increments its ID, as if it hadnīt been disconnected).

2001-03-13 19:12:29 With 2.4.2, cdrecord 1.9, and CD-Writer+ 8290 1.3C, I get the following (edited for length): (from cdrecord --scanbus): 0,0,0 0) 'HP ' 'CD-Writer+ 8290 ' '1.3C' Removable CD-ROM (from cdrecord -v device=[something here] -data [something here]): Device seems to be: Generic CD-ROM. cdrecord: Sorry, no CD/DVD-Recorder or unsupported CD/DVD-Recorder found on this target. Let me know if other information would be helpful. (Remove the capital letters from my email address before sending, though.)

2001-03-13 10:55:11 I confirm :-( Vendor: HP Model: CD-Writer+ 8290 Rev: 1.3C fails with my 2.4.2 kernel: it hangs on read attempts. I am looking forward to a fix, since that writer is working great on windoze machines.
