Just a note for anyone having problems with USB devices not being detected
or activated. I have a Shuttle VIA686 chipset motherboard with Award BIOS
6.0+. With Mandrake 8.+ the USB hub was recognized, but not my printer,
keyboard, mouse or modem. I tried disabling devfs amoung other things as
well as reading the various "How-to's" and docs and nothing worked. However,
after changing the option in the BIOS under PCI/PNP to have the BIOS to
assign an interupt to USB, every USB device attached became recognized. The
printer, which is an Epson Stylus 740, worked beautifully as so did the
keyboard and mouse. The modem is being recognized, but I haven't yet figured
out how to get it configured. Nevertheless, changing this option in the BIOS
is something I haven't noticed before and I thought this might help quite a
few people. Of course, this might only be peculiar to this BIOS or
motherboard. Hopefully, it is more general than that.

Same problem as Kimmo Epson 900 just doesn't work, /dev/usblp0 does give anything through. When I 'cat' it, it doesn't give an error, so I think device exists. /proc/bus/usb/devices gives the printer as well. (i think i'll have to use parallell interface for a while...) |

I built the new kernel 2.4.0-test1 for use on Redhat 6.2. I configured USB in the kernel and compiled (what I think are) the necessary USB modules. I have two USB-capable printers attached to my system. The first one is a Hewlett Packard DeskJet 970 Cse (USB only) and a Hewlett Packard LaserJet 6P (parallel only) attached to a Belkin F5U012 ExpressBus Plus which which is a IEEE-1284 USB/Parallel converter. Both of these devices work fine under Windows 98/2000 (yuk). Using the Control Panel, I configured a Text-Only printer to /dev/usblp0 and I can print text files to the HP 970Cse but the Orange light flashes after the page prints as if it were waiting for more input.
I cannot talk to the HP-6P even though I can see the Belkin device (I think). Any help would be appreciated.

2000-02-18 08:25:24 |
oh, and if you're gonna use an 810/812, 880/882, or any 895 printer, USB support is UNI-directional. if you're wondering why it won't do bi-directional, that's because the USB-capable printers in the 800 series (there are more in the series than I listed above, but above are the only good ones in the 800 series) weren't designed to do bi-di... only the 970's, 950's, and the upcoming 930's will do bi-di |
mushroom blue (shroom <at> rmci.net) |
2000-02-18 08:21:00 |
I used to be a tech support agent for HP Deskjet support, and if there's an 810/812, 880/882, or 895cse/895cxi driver, it'll work. you see, the bios in all these printers are the same, except some have been modified to print slower.... they'll all work with the same driver.
speaking of the bios:
if you "Hard Reset" the printer (unplug while it's still on, then plug back in) about 100-150 times, the bios will reset, thus turning an 810 into the faster 895 printer..... but for some reason resetting the bios back to the 895 setting disables USB. |
